How to use this page
The formula. Needed score = (target − banked marks) ÷ remaining weight. Example: homework counts 30% and you average 80 there, the final counts 70%. Banked = 80 × 30% = 24. To finish at 60 you need (60 − 24) ÷ 70% ≈ 51.4 on the final.
Two input modes. “Current + final weight” is the quick one-field version. “List components” lets you add each marked item (quiz, midterm, essay) with its own weight and score — whatever weight is left over is treated as still to come.
Read the table. The target table shows the needed score for 60/70/80/90 in one glance — useful when you are deciding whether to aim for a pass or push for a distinction. “Unreachable” means even a perfect score cannot get there.
Questions people ask
Homework 30%, exam 70% — what do I need to pass?
Say your weighted coursework average is 80: banked = 80 × 30% = 24. To finish at 60 you need (60 − 24) ÷ 70% ≈ 51.4 on the final. Plug in your own numbers and the tool does the same back-solve.
What if it says I need more than 100?
The target is mathematically unreachable under the current weights. The page also shows the best possible final grade (perfect marks on everything left) — reset the target or ask the instructor about make-up or bonus options.
How do I handle items that are not marked yet?
In the per-component mode, leave the score blank — its weight automatically joins the “still to come” part. Or enter a conservative guess to run a what-if.
Does it work for GPA-scale courses?
This page uses the 0-100 scale. For GPA targets use the Target GPA calculator, which back-solves the average needed on remaining credits; convert scales first if needed.
