How to use this page
Pick the table your school uses. A US graduate office quoting “TOEFL 90” usually reads the ETS table; a British programme quoting “IELTS 6.5” reads theirs. Where the two overlap, treat the stricter end as your target.
New scale. Tests from 2026-01-21 report on the 1-6 scale — use the first table or the “TOEFL 1-6” input. Older 0-120 scores stay valid for two years.
Sections matter. The IELTS→1-6 table also maps each skill, so a programme asking for “Speaking 5” can be checked column by column.
Questions people ask
What TOEFL score equals IELTS 7?
ETS's concordance gives a legacy range of 94-101 (about band 5 on the new scale); ielts.org's own chart gives 91-99. The two publishers differ, so we show both — the table your target school recognises decides.
What IELTS band equals a TOEFL 100?
On the ETS table 94-101 maps to IELTS 7.0; on IELTS's own chart 100-107 maps to 7.5. A 100 sits right at the seam — keep a safety margin against the stricter reading.
What does IELTS 6.5 correspond to in TOEFL?
ETS: legacy 79-93, new band 4.5 (B2). IELTS's own chart: 81-90. Many graduate programmes also set separate Writing/Speaking minimums — a total-score conversion doesn't guarantee section cutoffs.
Can a conversion table replace taking the other test?
No. Concordance tables are statistical mappings across cohorts — they don't guarantee an individual would earn the matching score. If a programme names a specific test, you still need that test.
Which table converts the new 1-6 TOEFL to IELTS?
For post-2026-01-21 scores on the 1-6 scale, use the ETS IELTS→1-6 table (the second table on this page). For legacy 0-120 scores, use the two 0-120 concordance tables.
How should I use the CEFR levels?
CEFR is the shared reference: IELTS 5.5-6.5 ≈ B2, 7-8 ≈ C1, 8.5+ ≈ C2; new TOEFL 5-5.5 = C1, 4-4.5 = B2, 6 = C2. When a programme states a CEFR level, you can align directly.
