Common score requirements
ETS recommends these new-scale minimums for programmes that used to set these 0-120 thresholds:
| Old requirement (0-120) | ETS recommended (1-6) | Band covers |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 5 | 95–106 |
| 90 | 4.5 | 86–94 |
| 80 | 4 | 72–85 |
| 70 | 3.5 | 58–71 |
How to use this page
Total scores. On the old scale the total is the sum of four 0-30 sections; on the new scale it is the average of the four band scores, rounded to the nearest half band — so a new 5 does not mean “about 100” in every cell, it covers 95-106. Score reports in the transition period add a comparable 0-120 total equal to the range midpoint (e.g. band 4.5 → 90).
Sections differ. Each skill has its own concordance: Speaking 24 lands on band 4.5 while Writing 24 lands on 5. Use the section mode when a programme sets per-skill minimums.
Which requirement counts? Universities are updating at different speeds. If a page still says “100”, ETS's recommendation table above is the reference; when in doubt, ask the programme directly.
Questions people ask
What is a legacy TOEFL 100 on the new 1-6 scale?
Under the official ETS concordance, a legacy total of 100 falls in the 95-106 range, which maps to band 5 (CEFR C1). ETS also recommends that programmes that required 100 now set 5.
What does a new band 5 equal on the 0-120 scale?
Band 5 corresponds to a legacy total range of 95-106. During the transition the comparable 0-120 score on score reports is the range midpoint (about 100.5, shown as a whole number). It is a range mapping, not a point-by-point one.
Are TOEFL scores from before January 2026 still valid?
TOEFL scores are valid for two years, so legacy 0-120 scores may still reach institutions through late 2027. During the transition, reports carry 1-6 scores, the CEFR level, and a comparable 0-120 total.
How is the new overall score calculated?
The new overall score is the mean of the four section bands (1-6, half-point steps) rounded to the nearest half band: 5.125 becomes 5, 5.25 becomes 5.5. The legacy total was the sum of four 0-30 sections.
How do I convert section scores?
ETS publishes separate 0-30 to 1-6 tables for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, and the bands differ (Speaking 24 is 4.5 while Writing 24 is 5). This tool converts sections too — full tables are below.
What if a school still lists a 0-120 requirement?
Universities update at different speeds during the two-year transition. ETS's recommended mappings are 100→5, 90→4.5, 80→4 and 70→3.5; always confirm on the programme's current page or by asking directly.
